The very first one...

Way back when the fanciest cake I made was a strawberry shortcake, and the most detailed cake had sprinkles on top, my husband turned twenty five. Twenty five seemed like such a huge number, soooo grown up. I took it upon  myself to make him the "coolest birthday cake ever."  Being that he is a huge sports fan, it didn't take much time until my train of thought turned to sports cakes....turned to baseball...turned to baseball caps. A baseball cap cake would be pretty cool, I thought. I had seen fondant cakes here and there, but they seemed so scary. I am always up for a challenge, so I figured now would be a great time to give it a try. And that was it...that's when I never viewed birthday cakes the same way again. I started to research everything and anything about fondant on the web. Being that we were living at the time in a far off distant land that never saw premade fondant cross its store shelves, I searched the web for a fondant recipe that I could make with basic ingredients. As always, Allrecipes.com stepped up to save the day, and I was armed with an easy enough recipe for homemade fondant. To make a long story short, I carved out three hours of time to work on "The Cake" (it now had a name) the week of his birthday. I had my two Monkeys at either side, ready to lick the bowl at a moments notice. The fondant recipe was basically a mixture of corn syrup, powder sugar and margarine. At the time I thought it turned out amazing. ( I have now graduated to Marshmallow Fondant which is a whole new world...)It was so much fun making the cake, and seeing my vague idea come to life. I was a little disappointed at how bright the blue came out (four bottles of blue food coloring later) but after the Yankee logo was attached, it was my little masterpiece. That weekend we threw a party and the cake was the centerpiece. Ok fine, my husband did get some attention. But the cake was amazing, everyone was impressed, and it was so satisfying seeing the project through from beginning to end. And that folks is how I got addicted to making birthday cakes. More birthday cakes to come...

A bit of the past...

I started this blog so that I can have a place to dump all the lovely pictures I take of the things I bake. I like to think of myself of a wannabe food photographer, and that leaves me with lots and lots of food pictures. Pictures I am not quite sure my facebook friends are interested in seeing. So to start with, here are some old pictures of my creations. The plan is to post all future yummy pics over here, instead of facebook, and free up my facebook friends to view much more important things, such as the status of their Farm, or their miles that they ran this morning at the gym. I am waaay to lazy to post all the recipes for these pictures, but if something catches your eye, feel free to email me, and I can send you the recipe.
